Speak Up For Democracy In Belarus! - 18 March 2012, all over Europe

Speak Up For Democracy In Belarus!

On Sunday, 18 March 2012, JEF activists and their friends all over Europe once more took over the streets to protest against and raise awareness on the last remaining dictatorship on the European continent.

Ever since coming to the power in 1994 president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko oppressed the freedom of his people and ignored their voices. JEF believes that the idea of federal Europe can come to the action only if all people in Europe become united in their action and support each other. Freedom is a key foundation of federal Europe and we as Europeans cannot leave the Belarusian citizens behind! The last presidential elections on 19th of December 2010 ended in mass detentions of protesters, with leaders of opposition being imprisoned. Numerous protests have shown that the people of Belarus have enough of Lukashenko’s rule. Our moral duty is to support them and help their voices being heard.

Over 85 local actions were implemented in many European cities. The map of participating cities can be viewed here. JEF is very happy that the action once again wasn't restricted solely to the members of JEF: many organisations who share our values of freedom and justice joined in and organized their own events or offered their official support. We are proud that this year's action was endorsed by five MEPs as well as Laureate of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, Dr. Alaksandr Milinkievich.

Please read the press releases issued by JEF before and after the action.

The photos of the actions can be viewed on our Flickr account or our Free Belarus Facebook page! By collecting pictures from young people all over the world we make an important statement that will be heard loud and clear by the EU institutions and officials, the dictatorial regime and the citizens in Belarus.

For more detailed information on the Free Belarus action please visit the website dedicated to it: free-belarus.eu.

JEF remains dedicated to calling for democracy in Belarus and solidarity with its people. As long as Lukashenka's dicatatorial regime will ignore the human rights and oppress the freedom of Belarusians, JEF will organize its “Free Belarus” actions and speak up for democracy in Belarus!
